Multiple Rescue Teams Search for Missing Hiker Near the North Fork American River

Search crews continued working Sunday in difficult weather conditions for a missing hiker last seen near the Codfish Falls Trail outside Colfax, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.

The search is centered in the river corridor near Colfax, where deputies, the sheriff’s dive team, and marine unit are working alongside the CAL FIRE NEU / Placer County Fire Department Tactical Rescue Team. Crews are searching by land, water, and air, using drones when weather conditions allow.

Authorities say the search began Friday evening after a report that a woman hiking the Codfish Falls Trail may be missing. Investigators learned she was last seen around 2:30 p.m. Friday walking the trail with her dog. About 15 minutes later, the dog was observed alone. Deputies later located the woman’s vehicle, along with her phone and a dog bowl near the river. The dog has since been found safe.

Officials say there is currently no evidence suggesting anything other than an accidental incident, though all possibilities remain under review.

Air support from the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services FIRIS program has been limited due to weather but will be deployed when conditions improve.

While community members have offered to help, authorities are asking the public to avoid the area and allow trained rescue teams to conduct the search, citing safety concerns and limited cell service.
