No License Needed! Free Fishing Days Return to California This Summer

California’s popular Free Fishing Days are back, offering the perfect chance to cast a line without a license and enjoy the state’s scenic waters. Mark your calendars: Saturday, July 5 and Saturday, August 30 are your two opportunities to fish for free in 2025.

Whether you’re chasing rainbow trout in the mountains, largemouth bass in your local lake, or Kokanee salmon in the reservoirs, these days are all about relaxing outdoors and maybe even reeling in dinner.

Free Fishing Days are ideal for newcomers wanting to try fishing, parents introducing kids to a new hobby, or seasoned anglers bringing a friend along. And remember—kids 15 and under can fish for free year-round in California.

Need a spot? The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has recently stocked catchable-size trout in waters like Lake Almanor (Plumas County), Burney Creek (Shasta County), and Silver Lake (Amador County), among others. You can find fishing locations, guides, stocking info, and urban angling resources on the CDFW website.

All standard fishing regulations still apply, including bag limits and gear rules, so be sure to review local guidelines before you go.

And if you find yourself hooked? An annual sport fishing license is now valid for 365 days from purchase—and helps support fish conservation across the state.
