North Tahoe’s Trail Network Gets a $9 Million Boost for Major Expansion

North Tahoe’s trail system is set for a major upgrade thanks to a $9 million investment approved by the Placer County Board of Supervisors.

The funding, sourced from transient occupancy tax revenues, will go toward seven key projects aimed at improving the Resort Triangle trail network, a continuous paved bike path connecting Tahoe City, Kings Beach, and Truckee.

A significant portion—$5.9 million—will support new trail construction and upgrades to aging infrastructure. Among the projects receiving funding are the North Tahoe Shared-Use Trail, the Martis Valley Trail expansion, and the reconstruction of the West Shore Trail. These improvements will enhance safety, accessibility, and connectivity for both locals and visitors.

Key projects include:

  • Tahoe City Public Utility District Multi-Use Trails – $3.9 million to repair and upgrade 17.2 miles of trails, addressing pavement cracking, drainage issues, and ADA compliance.
  • Martis Valley Trail – $2 million to extend the trail 1.23 miles toward Northstar Village.
  • North Tahoe Trail – Segment 1 – $1.2 million to construct a 2.4-mile paved trail from North Tahoe Regional Park to Carnelian Bay.
  • Tahoe City Downtown Access Improvements – $741,000 to expand parking, add EV charging stations, and improve pedestrian access.

These upgrades aim to promote sustainable transportation, alleviate congestion, and elevate the outdoor recreation experience in the Tahoe region.
