Palisades Tahoe Introduces Binny, Its Adorable New Avalanche Rescue Pup

Palisades Tahoe welcomed a furry new recruit to its Avalanche Rescue Dog team just in time for International Dog Day (Aug. 26). Meet Binny, short for Bintag, named after a legendary Indonesian surf break—and his handler, Johnathan.

Binny has just begun his training journey, which will span the next two years before he becomes fully mission-ready. Early training focuses on socialization and helping him grow comfortable with the mountain environment, everything from chairlifts to snowcats to busy ski slopes.

Guests may see Binny and Johnathan around the resort as they work together, but staff remind visitors that he’s on the job. If you spot the pup, please give him and his handler space, especially near skis and boards, and always ask before approaching.

Avalanche dogs like Binny play a vital role in mountain safety, using their speed and incredible sense of smell to locate buried skiers and riders in emergencies. With the community’s support, Binny is on track to join Palisades Tahoe’s elite team of four-legged heroes, helping keep the mountains safe for everyone.
