Photos Show the Updated Trail Repair at the Closed Burney Falls
The trail down to the pool at Burney Falls has been under construction since April, effectively closing one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Northern California. Now, park officials have shared photo updates of the construction of the trail.
The $835,000 trail renovation project, which began April 1st, closed the popular Falls Loop Trail and Burney Creek Trail through the summer and likely deep into the fall season. The closures aims to address the wear and tear on these trails and slopes from heavy foot traffic to the falls and pool areas.
State Park officials shared photos of the trail construction on Facebook this week. The photos show rocks and debris laying on the trail, along with a couple trees cut down near the trail:
Despite the popular trail’s closure, the park’s campgrounds, as well as the Burney Falls General Store, Marina, Visitor Center, and various day-use areas, remain open. Additional trails such as the Rim Trail, PSEA Trail, Headwaters Trail, and Pioneer Cemetery Trail are also accessible for hikers seeking alternative routes within the park.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s closed and what’s open in the park:
What’s closed?
- Falls Loop Trail
- Burney Creek Trail
- Visitors will have no access to the waterfall or fall’s pool area with limited views from the viewing area at the top of the falls.
What’s open?
- The remainder of the park will be open for visitors including the Rim and Pioneer campgrounds, Burney Falls General Store, Marina, Visitor Center, and day-use areas.
- The Rim Trail, PSEA Trail, Headwaters Trail and Pioneer Cemetery Trail will remain open for visitors.
- The Fisherman’s Bridge will remain open to provide access to and from park via the Pacific Crest Trail, Headwaters Trail Loop, and Headwaters Equestrian Camp only from the Falls Overlook.
