Point Reyes Sand Sculpture Contest Returns this Week
The annual Sand Sculpture Contest at Drakes Beach, hosted by Point Reyes National Seashore, is coming back this year with a new date: Saturday, September 7, 2024.
Traditionally held on Labor Day weekend, this year’s event will take place the weekend after, allowing participants to showcase their creativity and enjoy the stunning coastal setting without the holiday crowds.
This free community event is open to all ages, with categories for children (14 and under), families, and adults. Participants can let their imaginations run wild, creating unique sand sculptures using only materials found on Drakes Beach. Please remember not to use plants, rocks, or gravel from the cliffs and build above the high tide line for safety.
Schedule of Events:
Registration: Begins at 9 a.m. at the Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center.
Judging: Starts at noon.
Awards Ceremony: Prizes will be given out at 3 p.m.
Three prizes will be awarded in each category, plus a special “People’s Choice” award. The event is free for both participants and spectators, making it a perfect family outing. While this event is a fantastic opportunity to spend a fun day at the beach, visitors should be aware that parking at Drakes Beach will be limited. Carpooling with friends is highly recommended. For those who prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting another beach within the park.

Be sure to bring a picnic and enjoy a full day by the ocean!During the contest, the PRNSA park store adjacent to the visitor center will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering hot and cold drinks, snacks, sandwiches, books, and gifts.
