Prescribed Burns Planned Near Numerous Outdoor Destinations in Shasta-Trinity National Forest

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest plans to carry out a series of prescribed fire operations beginning Monday, Jan. 12, with work expected to continue through Friday, Jan. 16, weather and approvals permitting.
Forest officials say the controlled burns are designed to reduce overgrown vegetation and lower wildfire risk, helping protect nearby communities, infrastructure, and natural resources ahead of future fire seasons.
Planned burn locations span several ranger districts. In the McCloud Ranger District, crews will conduct pile burns at Sandy and Bottom landings north of Pondosa, as well as smaller hand-pile burns near Middle Falls on the McCloud River. Along the Shasta Lake Ranger District, multiple pile burns are scheduled near Interstate 5 between Packers Bay and Antlers Bridge. Additional operations are planned near Trinity Dam in the Weaverville Ranger District and near Wildwood in the Yolla Bolla Ranger District.
Some areas may temporarily close to the public for safety reasons during burn operations. Visitors are advised to watch for posted warnings and obey all closures near active fire areas.
Residents across parts of the North State may notice smoke during the burns. Officials recommend slowing down while driving through smoky areas and using headlights for visibility. Air quality updates will be available through AirNow.
Burn activity will be evaluated daily, and operations may be postponed if weather conditions change. Updates will be shared through forest communication channels and InciWeb.
