Prescribed Burns Underway Around Lake Tahoe This Fall and Winter

The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit began prescribed fire operations this week, with work expected to extend through fall and winter as weather allows. These controlled burns reduce overgrown vegetation to protect communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from severe wildfire.

Target areas include:

  • Cascade FA 242, Cascade 132, and Cascade 118 (El Dorado County), along Highway 89 near Spring Creek by South Lake Tahoe
  • Big Meadow (El Dorado County), Highway 89 at Luther Pass near Christmas Valley
  • Lilly Lake BE 01–03 (El Dorado County), Benwood Meadow near Echo Summit
  • Montreal (Douglas County), U.S. Highway 50 near Spooner Summit

Temporary closures are possible near each project for public safety. Watch for posted signs and personnel on scene. Drivers should slow down, turn on headlights, and use extra caution when smoke is present.

Some smoke is expected in nearby neighborhoods during and shortly after ignition. For current air quality, check the AirNow website or app. Burn plans are evaluated immediately prior to ignition and may be canceled if conditions are not suitable.

For updates, follow the forest’s website and social channels, and consult the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team Prescribed Fire Map. County emergency management offices will be notified when burning begins.
