Shasta Ascension Race Returns to the Mt. Shasta Ski Park in January

Backcountry ski and splitboard enthusiasts, it’s time to gear up! The 11th annual Shasta Ascension Race, hosted by the Friends of the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center, is back and better than ever. Scheduled for January 25, this iconic uphill race promises a thrilling day of challenges, fun, and community vibes at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park.
The race adopts a classic ski-mountaineering (ski-mo) format, featuring a timed course that winds through rugged winter alpine terrain with a series of checkpoints along the way. Participants must rely solely on their own strength and skill, climbing and descending the challenging trail using specialized backcountry skiing equipment and techniques.
This year’s theme is “Psychedelic”, so break out your grooviest gear and embrace the throwback vibes. For those looking to make an even bigger statement, the race is debuting the Heavy Metal category, giving you the perfect excuse to don leather pants and hairspray for an epic shred session.

The Shasta Ascension is a ski mountaineering (ski-mo) race that tests your endurance and skills. Racers climb and descend a challenging course under their own power, passing through checkpoints using backcountry ski techniques. The event welcomes randonee, telemark, and splitboard setups.
