Sneaker Wave Threat Prompts Caution Along Northern California Coast

Beachgoers along Northern California’s coast are being urged to use extra caution as an elevated risk of sneaker waves develops through tonight.
Forecasters warn that ocean conditions can be deceptive, with long stretches of relatively small waves followed by a sudden surge that rushes far up the beach. These sneaker waves can arrive without warning and are powerful enough to knock people off their feet and pull them into the ocean.
The advisory covers coastal areas of Del Norte County, Humboldt County, and Mendocino County, including exposed stretches of shoreline where steep beaches, rocks, and jetties increase the danger. Conditions are expected to persist from Wednesday morning through the evening hours.

Officials stress that the ocean may appear calm for up to 30 minutes before a large wave suddenly breaks far inland. In addition to sweeping people into the water, sneaker waves can shift heavy debris like logs, creating an added risk of serious injury.
Visitors are advised to stay well back from the waterline, avoid rocky outcrops and jetties, and never turn their back on the ocean. Keeping a wide buffer between yourself and the surf is one of the best ways to stay safe during these conditions.
If you’re heading to the coast, now is a good time to admire the ocean from a distance and keep a close eye on changing wave patterns.
