Update: Tahoe Highways Reopen After Snow Slide Closures

Update – 5 PM:

Original story:

Although the current storm has yet to reach the Tahoe mountains, multiple snow slides have closed popular highways in the area. Snow removal equipment is being brought into the area with hopes to clean up the roads and let traffic move as soon as possible.

First, the popular area of Highway 89 around Emerald Bay is closed in both directions, most likely stranding some vehicles today. The roadway is the only viable path from west Tahoe to South Lake Tahoe:

Also, there is a snow slide that has closed Highway 50 near Echo Summit with no traffic moving in either direction. Highway 50 is the fastest and easiest route from South Lake Tahoe to Sacramento and is one of the most popular roadways in Tahoe:

There is no timetable for the reopening of the roads, but considering the popularity of the highways, it can only be assumed this is of top priority for CalTrans officials. We will provide updates when the road reopens.
