Storm Damage Forces Closure of Popular Suspension Bridge Over the Trinity River

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest has announced the long-term closure of a suspension bridge crossing the South Fork Trinity River near Scott Flat Campground following damage from recent winter storms.
Forest officials said the bridge, which is part of the South Fork National Recreation Trail, sustained storm-related damage significant enough to warrant a full closure for public safety. The closure goes into effect Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2025, and is expected to remain in place through Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026.

During the closure period, all public access to the suspension bridge is prohibited. Forest officials emphasized that no one is allowed on the bridge while assessments, repairs, and long-term planning are underway. Exceptions are limited to federal, state, or local officers performing official duties, organized rescue or firefighting personnel, and individuals holding Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48.
Violating the closure order could result in serious penalties, including fines of up to $5,000 for individuals or $10,000 for organizations, as well as potential imprisonment for up to six months.
Visitors planning trips to the Scott Flat Campground or surrounding trail system are encouraged to check current conditions and plan alternate routes. Forest officials said updates will be shared as repairs progress and reopening timelines become clearer.
