It think we can all agree that Mt. Shasta is a magical place. Just being in its presence provides strong, palpable emotions. Certainly, such natural beauty can invoke these sort of feelings, but is there more to the story?

Growing up, I frequently heard about the legends of Mt. Shasta –

  • According to local Indian tribes, Mount Shasta is inhabited by the spirit chief Skell who descended from heaven to the mountain’s summit.
  • In 1899, Frederick Spencer Oliver published A Dweller on Two Planets, which claimed that survivors from a sunken continent called Lemuria were living in or on Mount Shasta.
  • In 1904, a British prospector named JC Brown claimed to have discovered a lost underground city beneath Mt. Shasta.

What stories have you heard?

Bigfoot? Aliens? Lemurians? Underground cities? Why is Mt. Shasta so frequently accused of being a playground for strange and paranormal activities?
