Sugar Bowl Launches $100 Million Modernization Project

Sugar Bowl Resort, one of Tahoe’s last independently owned ski areas, is undergoing its largest transformation in 86 years with a $100 million renovation set to begin this summer.
The upgrades will revamp the historic Village Lodge with a new two-tiered dining terrace, an expanded kitchen, and elevated cuisine led by a new executive chef from San Francisco. A refreshed lounge and espresso bar are also part of the redesign, blending Sugar Bowl’s old-school charm with modern comfort.
The resort’s outdated village gondola will be replaced next year with a faster eight-person version and a new terminal to improve the guest arrival experience. Meanwhile, plans are underway to reimagine the Judah Lodge to better handle day visitors and improve flow from parking to the lifts.
Unlike many Tahoe resorts turning into year-round playgrounds, Sugar Bowl remains focused on the winter experience. The goal isn’t to grow, but to enhance — preserving the resort’s soul while adapting to the modern skier. Daily ticket caps and advanced reservations aim to reduce crowds and protect the guest experience.
This long-term investment seeks to keep Sugar Bowl competitive in an evolving ski industry while holding on to the character that’s made it a favorite for generations.
