Tahoe Winter Parking Bans Begin: Fines Increased to Keep Roads Clear for Snow Removal

As of November 1, winter parking bans are now in effect throughout the Tahoe region, aiming to keep roadways clear for safe and efficient snow removal during the winter months. The rules prohibit parking along roads, on roadside shoulders, and especially in front of snow stakes, which help guide plow drivers in deep snow.

In eastern Placer County and Truckee, authorities urge drivers to avoid public roads and ensure vehicles are fully out of the public right-of-way.

“Please note that parking behind snow poles is not enough—you must ensure your vehicle is fully out of the public right-of-way,” the Truckee Police Department said in a statement.

Violators risk tickets or towing, with Placer County recently increasing fines for winter parking violations. Fines now start at $150 and escalate to $450 for repeat offenses. Instead, drivers are advised to use designated parking areas in town centers or residential driveways and avoid overnight parking in public lots, as these areas also need to be plowed.

Leaving a vehicle on the street during a storm not only risks fines but can also lead to plows encasing it in dense, icy snow berms that are challenging to clear. The winter parking restrictions will be enforced through April, helping to ensure both safe roads and undamaged vehicles during Tahoe’s snowy season.
