Terrifying Dashcam Video Shows SUV Slide Off Icy Tahoe Road

Dramatic dashcam footage shows just how quickly winter driving can turn dangerous in Lake Tahoe.

The video, captured on Christmas Day, shows a black SUV losing traction on an icy, snow-covered roadway before sliding off the road and nose-diving down a steep embankment, nearly plunging over a cliff. The terrifying moment unfolded in seconds as the vehicle spun out, then came to rest teetering on its side, with two wheels still spinning in the snow.

According to KABC, several vehicles passed the scene, but two brothers traveling just behind the SUV — Yvett Bañares-Tala and Ruben Tala — immediately pulled over and rushed to help. Dashcam footage shows one of the brothers sprinting toward the dangling vehicle and grabbing onto the door as occupants inside waved frantically for help.

Working quickly, the brothers helped two people and their two dogs safely climb out of the SUV before first responders arrived. Despite the violent slide and the precarious position of the vehicle, no one was injured.

The incident is a stark reminder of the hazards that come with winter travel in the Sierra. Authorities continue to urge drivers to slow down, carry chains when required, and be prepared for sudden icy conditions — even on roads that appear passable.
