U.S. 395 Closed for 90 Miles in Eastern Sierra Amid Whiteout Storm

A massive stretch of U.S. 395 is shut down in the Eastern Sierra as a powerful winter storm creates dangerous whiteout conditions.
Caltrans has closed the highway from Gorge Road near Bishop north to State Route 182 in Bridgeport — a span of roughly 90 miles. Officials say the closure was triggered by near-zero visibility and multiple vehicle spinouts along the corridor. The shutdown could remain in effect overnight depending on how conditions evolve.
Intermittent CHP escorts may be provided when possible, but travel remains extremely hazardous. Drivers looking for an alternate route can use U.S. 6 from Bishop to connect with Nevada Route 95.
With heavy snowfall, strong winds, and slick pavement continuing across Mono County, Caltrans is urging the public to avoid nonessential travel until the worst of the storm passes. Those who must drive should check current road conditions through Caltrans’ QuickMap or call the state’s road condition hotline before heading out.
Motorists are also reminded to slow down, give snowplows plenty of room, and move over for emergency crews.
