Whiteout Conditions Close Interstate 80 Near Lake Tahoe
The snowfall in the Sierra is beginning to get intense as California Highway Patrol announced Interstate 80 is now closed from Applegate to the Nevada State line, beginning at 11 am on Monday. There is currently no estimated time of reopening.
CHP shared a video of the current conditions near Donner Summit and it’s quite treacherous:
The Truckee office of the CHP confirmed the road closure with no estimated reopening time. With a Blizzard Warning issued by the National Weather Service throughout the Sierra, travel in the mountains is highly discouraged right now. Caltrans and the Truckee CHP have reported turning back traffic due to poor visibility and spinouts.
From Mount Shasta to the Eastern Sierra, closures and chain control are prevalent throughout the region and mountain travel is highly discouraged.
