Wolf Sightings Near Lake Tahoe Bring Speculation on California’s Newest Wolf Pack
Wolves, once thought extinct in California, are making a comeback, with seven confirmed packs in the state. Now, there are signs of an eighth pack near South Lake Tahoe, generating excitement among wildlife enthusiasts.
Over the past month, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) received several reports of wolf sightings in Hope Valley, about 20 miles south of South Lake Tahoe.CDFW crews have been monitoring the area, tracking paw prints, setting bait, and installing cameras to confirm the sightings.
“If it is a wolf, we’ll determine whether it’s from out of state or an existing California pack,” said Axel Hunnicutt, CDFW’s gray wolf coordinator.
Since 2015, California’s wolf population has grown steadily, with more than 100 pups born across seven known packs. CDFW is also investigating other areas with potential wolf activity, now adding Hope Valley to the list. While wolves returning may raise concerns for locals, wolf-human encounters are rare, and officials are working with local ranchers to safeguard livestock.
If confirmed, the presence of a new pack in Hope Valley would mark another milestone in California’s wolf recovery, showcasing the species’ ability to reclaim its historic habitat.
