20-Foot Waves Forecast for Northern California Coastline

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Eureka has issued a high surf advisory for the Northern California coastline, including Coastal Del Norte, Northern Humboldt, Southwestern Humboldt, and Mendocino counties. The advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday.

Large breaking waves between 21 and 23 feet are expected during this period. These conditions are likely to create dangerous surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Increased wave run-up on beaches could lead to waves topping and washing over large rocks and jetties, posing significant risks to beachgoers.

The NWS strongly discourages beachcombing and advises staying away from the surf zone. Large waves can be erratic and unpredictable, with the potential to sweep people into frigid and turbulent waters. For mariners, the advisory recommends extreme caution for those traversing the bar and suggests staying in port until conditions improve. Mariners should contact the U.S. Coast Guard for information regarding harbor and bar closures.

The advisory will remain in effect until 9 a.m. on Sunday. If you’re in the affected areas this weekend, exercise caution and prioritize safety near the water. Stay updated with information from the NWS and local authorities.
