6 Survivors Rescued in Tahoe Avalanche, 9 Remain Unaccounted For

Rescue crews successfully reached six skiers Tuesday night following the avalanche near Castle Peak in Lake Tahoe, but the search for the remaining missing members of the group continues.
According to a late-night update from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, all six initially reported survivors were rescued after several hours in extreme storm conditions. Teams battled heavy snowfall, wind, and dangerous avalanche terrain before safely transporting the skiers out. They were evaluated by Truckee Fire upon extraction, and two were taken to a hospital for further treatment.
Officials also clarified that the total number of people in the guided group has been revised. While it was first believed that 16 individuals were on the trip, authorities now say 15 people were in the backcountry when the avalanche occurred. That means nine skiers remain unaccounted for.

The incident unfolded Tuesday morning near the Frog Lake huts in the Castle Peak area as a powerful Sierra storm brought intense snowfall and HIGH avalanche danger to the region.
Search operations are ongoing, though continued efforts will depend heavily on weather conditions.
