Burney Falls Trail Closure Now Expected to Last Until 2025
The ongoing renovation project on the Falls Loop Trail at McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, initially scheduled to wrap up in 2024, is now expected to extend into 2025. Launched in April as an $835,000 initiative, this extensive project aims to repair and enhance trail areas heavily impacted by foot traffic and erosion around Burney Falls.
The Falls Loop Trail and Burney Creek Trail remain closed to visitors, limiting access to the falls and pool areas with only restricted views available from the upper overlook. Despite the extended closure, the park continues to welcome visitors, keeping open the Rim and Pioneer campgrounds, Burney Falls General Store, Marina, Visitor Center, and other day-use facilities.
For those eager to explore the park, alternative trails like the Rim Trail, PSEA Trail, Headwaters Trail, and Pioneer Cemetery Trail remain accessible. Fisherman’s Bridge also offers trail access to areas within the park, including the Pacific Crest Trail and Headwaters Equestrian Camp, though only from the Falls Overlook.
Visitors should be prepared for additional delays near the park entrance, as a concurrent Caltrans Highway 89 rehabilitation project may cause traffic congestion.
