Electric Flying Ferry Could Revolutionize Lake Tahoe Transportation

A groundbreaking electric flying ferry may soon glide across the waters of Lake Tahoe, promising to revolutionize transportation in the region and help address its growing traffic problem.

Ryan Meinzer, founder and CEO of Fly Tahoe, envisions the ferry as a sustainable and efficient solution for navigating the iconic lake. If realized, it would be the first electric flying ferry in the United States, joining the ranks of a similar vessel currently operating in Stockholm, Sweden.

The ferry operates using hydrofoils—wings beneath the water that create lift, allowing the vessel to “fly” above the waves. This innovative technology not only increases efficiency by tenfold but also enables the craft to be powered entirely by batteries, aligning perfectly with efforts to protect Lake Tahoe’s pristine environment.

Meinzer’s vision includes ferrying passengers across the lake in just 30 minutes, compared to the typical one-and-a-half-hour journey. With plans for five round trips a day, the ferry could reduce congestion and even make commuting between South and North Lake Tahoe more feasible, potentially improving the area’s housing and job markets.

The project, however, still faces regulatory hurdles as Meinzer works with local and federal officials to gain approval. If successful, the ferry could hit the water by late 2025 or early 2026, offering rides at approximately $50 each way.

With its potential to clear roads, improve accessibility, and protect the environment, the electric flying ferry could represent a significant leap forward for Lake Tahoe’s transportation and sustainability efforts.
