Update: Forward Progress Stopped on Palo Cedro’s Gilbert Fire
Update: CalFire has announced that the Gilbert Fire, which grew to 25 acres, closed down Old Highway 44 and forced evacuations in Palo Cedro, is no longer moving forward. Red Cross has set up an evacuation center at Junction School, but with forward progress halted, residents will most likely return to their homes soon.

A small but fast-moving fire in Palo Cedro has jumped Old Highway 44, closing down Highway 44 and prompting evacuations in the area. Currently, the vegetation fire sits at roughly 15-25 acres acres but is in the direct line of the highway and structures.
The California Highway Patrol is updating residents via social media:
Here is an updated list of the evacuation areas:
- North of Highway 44
- West of Deschutes Road
- East of Logan Road
- South of Sunnyoaks Drive
The fire was reported at about 4:25 pm on Sunday but has grown to approximately 20 acres in the hour and a half since. The winds are currently moving south and multiple spot fires are reported at the scene.
