Heads Up, Tahoe Travelers: U.S. 50 Construction Will Bring Delays Starting This Week

If you’re planning a trip to Lake Tahoe, leave a little extra time on the road. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will resume major repaving work on U.S. 50 starting July 13, continuing through July 25.

Construction will reduce the highway to one lane in each direction between State Route 207 and Elks Point Road from Sunday evenings (8 p.m.) through Friday afternoons (noon). All lanes will reopen on weekends. Speed limits through the work zone will be reduced to 35 mph, and moderate delays are expected.

The project, which began in April and paused for the Fourth of July and the American Century Championship, will resurface more than 13 miles of aging roadway between Spooner Summit and the Nevada/California border. Crews will remove three inches of old pavement and replace it with fresh asphalt, upgrade guardrails, and install rumble strips to improve safety.

While businesses and homes will remain accessible, temporary closures of side streets and driveways may occur as excavation work moves through the area. Steel plates and earthwork will be used to restore access where needed.

This stretch of highway sees about 26,000 drivers daily, and hasn’t had full resurfacing since 2007. The improvements aim to make the drive smoother, safer, and more efficient.
