Meet Captain Awesome: The NorCal Campaign Helping Men Tackle Mental Health

Men in Northern California are resilient, hardworking, and play a key role in supporting their communities.  However, they also face a serious challenge: high suicide rates.

In Shasta County alone, men make up nearly half of the population but account for 84% of all suicide deaths. Often, men are pressured by society to handle tough situations by themselves instead of getting support.

That’s where Captain Awesome comes in. Shasta County men created this campaign to reduce the stigma about men’s mental health and encourage fellow men to get support when they need it before a crisis occurs.  Men who participate in Captain Awesome champion mental wellbeing and resilience. They offer tips, tools and advice to help fellow men tune up their awesome. Check out the League of Awesome Men here: Captain-Awesome.org/Gallery/

In addition to the men featured in the campaign, Captain Awesome is supported by the Men’s Advisory Group (MAG). The MAG is made up of local men whose members provide feedback on campaign messaging and share ideas for Captain Awesome activities.

Do you live in Shasta County? Help us prevent suicide among men by supporting Captain Awesome!  You can be featured in the campaign, join the MAG, recommend someone who would make a great candidate, and/or connect guys to the Captain Awesome website for resources – Captain-Awesome.org
