Historic Water Race Returns to the Sacramento River in Redding
Visit Redding and Headwaters Adventure Company have announced the revival of the Lake Redding Regatta, a cherished local event from the 1930s.
This iconic regatta will make its grand comeback on August 25, 2024, transforming into a modern paddle sports exhibition on the Sacramento River. The event will take place from 10 AM to 4 PM at Lake Redding Park and the Diestelhorst Bridge, featuring kayak and Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) races, live music, local food vendors, and river safety clinics.
The original Lake Redding Regatta, held from 1933 to 1939, was a premier summer attraction for Redding, drawing crowds from across California and Oregon. The 2024 revival aims to reconnect the community with this rich history while highlighting Redding’s outstanding recreational opportunities.
“We’re excited to partner with Headwaters Adventure Company to bring back this historic event and showcase Redding’s beautiful Sacramento River,” said Danny Orloff, Tourism Marketing Director for Visit Redding. “Whether you’re a paddler or a spectator, the Lake Redding Regatta offers something for everyone to enjoy.”
Paddlers of all skill levels are encouraged to register for the kayak and SUP races. For those who prefer to stay on dry land, the event promises a festive atmosphere with live music and delicious local fare. Food vendors will include coffee from Evergreen and tri-tip sandwiches and sides catered by ODell Craft BBQ.
“We invite the entire community to come out and be part of this historic revival,” added Orloff. “Even if you’re not racing, join us to cheer on the participants and enjoy a day of fun by the river.”
The Shasta Historical Society will host an informational booth to deepen the event’s connection to local heritage. Attendees can explore the regatta’s history and learn about Redding’s past, alongside the various resources and programs the Society offers to preserve and share the community’s stories.
Safety remains a top priority. All participants are required to wear appropriate personal flotation devices (PFDs) and adhere to river safety guidelines. Headwaters Adventure Company will conduct river safety clinics for participants before the event.
Join the community on August 25 for a day of paddling, history, and fun by the Sacramento River. The revival of the Lake Redding Regatta is sure to be a memorable event for all ages.
