Legislators Looking to Expand the Golden Gate National Recreation by Nearly 900 Acres

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) is poised for a significant expansion, thanks to new legislation proposed by U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo and U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla. This legislative effort aims to add nearly 900 acres to one of the nation’s most beloved urban parks.

The proposal seeks to allow the National Park Service to acquire the 896-acre Scarper Ridge Property in San Mateo County. This land is situated across from the Rancho Corral de Tierra, a nearly 4,000-acre site already managed by the Park Service.

While the expansion will inevitably increase park traffic, lawmakers emphasize that the primary goal is conservation. The additional land will help protect endangered plants and wildlife and enhance the connectivity of public lands and hiking trails for both locals and visitors.

“Expanding the park’s boundary to incorporate the Scarper Ridge Property would allow the National Park Service to help protect critically threatened and endangered plants and wildlife while connecting public lands and hiking trails,” said Senator Padilla.

“Adding this land to Rancho will close gaps and ensure that these scenic trails and coastal vistas are protected for future generations,” said Representative Eshoo.

This legislative proposal is essential for the park’s expansion, according to the National Park Service.

The 896-acre Scarper Ridge Property is a vital area filled with diverse natural habitats and species. For years, there has been hope for its inclusion in the Rancho Corral de Tierra landscape.

Golden Gate Park spans approximately 80,000 acres and includes famous landmarks such as Alcatraz Island and San Francisco’s Presidio. The proposed expansion would further extend its reach along San Mateo County’s picturesque coastline.
