Influencer Sparks Outrage After Crossing Safety Barrier at Yosemite’s Nevada Falls

A viral Instagram video from Yosemite National Park is drawing sharp criticism after showing a visitor standing in a restricted area above Nevada Falls, one of the park’s most hazardous locations.
The clip, shared widely after appearing on the “Tourons of National Parks” social account, shows a woman posing on a granite ledge just beyond a protective barrier near the top of the waterfall. While the scene may look calm on camera, park regulars quickly recognized the danger. The rock surface in that area is constantly slick from mist and runoff, making slips both common and often deadly.
Nevada Falls has a tragic history tied to risky behavior. In 2018, an 18-year-old visitor died after slipping on the same granite while attempting to take a photo. Other fatal incidents have occurred over the years, reinforcing why barriers were installed in the first place.
Much of the online backlash centered not on the influencer herself, but on the consequences of her actions. Commenters noted that a fall would likely trigger a rescue response from Yosemite Search and Rescue, putting rangers and volunteers at serious risk during a preventable emergency.
Park officials continue to stress that safety barriers exist to protect everyone. Ignoring them for a photo doesn’t just endanger one person—it risks lives across the park.
