Interstate 80 Reopens Over Donner Pass for Eastbound Passenger Vehicles

Following a near 72-hour closure of Interstate 80 over Donner Summit due to the historic “DEEPcember” snowstorm, the popular roadway has reopened to eastbound passenger vehicles with chain controls. There is still no timetable for westbound traffic reopening.

As only the Truckee CHP would do, they announced the reopening with a fun meme on social media:

Traffic in the Sierra has been an absolute nightmare since the storm began growing intense on the night of Christmas day. Highways 50, 88 and 395 also closed during the storm, making mountain travel nearly impossible.

After 50 reopened in both directions Tuesday morning, bumper-to-bumper traffic was estimated to be 50 miles in both directions throughout the day. It’s possible that I-80 could see similar delays right after opening. But it does offer a lifeline to Tahoe locals not able to get home. Travel safe.
