Luxury Chalet Development Proposed at Lake Tahoe Ski Resort

A major expansion could be coming to one of Northern California’s most iconic luxury resorts. The Ritz-Carlton at Northstar is proposing a new development called the Ritz-Carlton Residences/Lake Tahoe Mountain Chalets, bringing an additional 38 condominium units, spread across 18 high-end chalets, to the mountainside.
Each chalet would include multiple bedrooms (74 total across the project), private two-car garages, and access to an elevated walkway connecting directly to the hotel. Plans also call for a partially underground parking structure and upgrades to the surrounding area, including new sidewalks, pedestrian walkways, and a private road.
According to Placer County documents, the 3.4-acre project would be built atop a 114-space employee parking lot. Chalet owners would have the option of placing their units into the Ritz-Carlton’s rental program, adding new luxury lodging inventory to the resort.
The proposal is still in its early stages. The Placer County Planning Commission will review the project on December 4, including a request to rezone the area from residential multifamily to a resort designation.
The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe, which opened in 2009, has earned top accolades over the years—including being named the No. 1 resort in Northern California and one of the world’s top 50 resorts by Condé Nast Traveler. A previous plan from 2005 approved 41 condos for the site, but construction never moved forward after the 2008 economic downturn.
If approved, the Mountain Chalets would mark the resort’s first major expansion in more than a decade—bringing new luxury accommodations to one of the most popular winter destinations in Northern California.
