A Victorian Christmas Wonderland Takes Over Nevada City in December

One of Northern California’s most beloved holiday traditions is returning this December as Nevada City transforms into a Victorian Christmas village filled with music, lights, street vendors, and old-fashioned charm. The event takes place on Sundays, December 7, 14, & 21 from 1:30–6 p.m. and Wednesdays, December 10 & 17 from 5–9 p.m.

Since 1978, Victorian Christmas has turned Nevada City’s historic downtown into a festive 19th-century streetscape. Visitors stroll hilly, lamp-lit streets while carolers in Victorian attire, street vendors, and the smell of roasting chestnuts fill the air.

This year’s celebration features more than 100 artisan vendors, extended-hours boutique shopping, live entertainment, holiday treats and libations, and appearances from Santa and Father Christmas.

Highlights of the Event

  • Hot Roasted Chestnuts: Grab a free sample from the open-fire pit in the Food Court.
  • Artisan Vendors & Shops: Explore handcrafted gifts and locally made treasures along Broad and Main Streets.
  • Dickens Village Display: View the extensive Department 56 collection showcased in the Alpha Building windows.
  • Santa at the Masonic Lodge: Kids can meet Santa and get a photo upstairs at 108 North Pine Street.
  • Walking Christmas Tree & Toy Soldier: Catch these beloved roaming characters for festive photo ops.
  • 25-Foot Town Christmas Tree: Don’t miss the traditionally decorated tree in Robinson Plaza.
  • Classic Decorations: Nearly 500 feet of fresh cedar garland and authentic gas lamps adorned with handmade swags bring the town to life.

Families will also enjoy balloon animals, magic shows, toy boutiques, and more. Dogs on leashes are welcome. While the event is rain or shine, extreme weather may lead to cancellations.

With music in the streets and holiday spirit in the air, Nevada City’s Victorian Christmas is one of the most magical winter events in Northern California.
