The winter storm peaked Sunday morning and it’s making mountain travel throughout the state nearly impossible. One of the most unique situations for mountain travel is the town of Mammoth Lakes, which is currently closed in all directions due to blizzard conditions with no timetable for reopening.

Highway 395 is currently closed in both directions for approximately 40 miles between Bishop and the Mammoth Scenic Route, making it impossible to reach Mammoth. CalTrans webcams show the area looking like a baron wasteland in the Eastern Sierra:

The town of Mammoth Lakes has been getting nuked by snow since Friday, including 30 inches at Mammoth Mountain in just 48 hours. A video showed the snow falling hard Sunday morning as freshly parked cars begin the process of getting buried:

Despite the blizzard conditions, Mammoth Mountain is open on Sunday, making it a local affair. When the storm passes Monday, the locals might get a bluebird day for the ages on the mountain.
