Man Arrested in Connection to Arson Fire that Destroyed Chico’s Bidwell Mansion

Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the fire that destroyed the iconic Bidwell Mansion in Chico. The mansion, a California Historical Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was severely damaged in a blaze on December 11.

Kevin Alexander Carlson, 30, of Chico, was taken into custody on Thursday by California State Parks, Cal Fire, and the Chico Police Department. Carlson faces multiple charges, including arson. State Parks officials have not disclosed details about how they identified Carlson as a suspect or the evidence linking him to the fire, citing concerns about compromising the investigation.

The mansion, which had been closed for restoration since May, caught fire earlier this month. Days later, investigators determined that the blaze was intentionally set.

State Parks has scheduled a press conference for Monday to provide additional details on Carlson’s arrest and the ongoing investigation. Officials are also asking the public to submit any photos or videos of the fire to aid the case.

The future of the historic site remains uncertain as crews assess what can be salvaged. State Parks plans to involve the community, including tribal consultations, in determining the next steps for the mansion.

Built in 1868 by California pioneer John Bidwell, the 26-room Victorian mansion hosted notable guests such as President Rutherford B. Hayes, Civil War General William Sherman, and women’s rights advocate Susan B. Anthony. Its destruction marks a significant loss for the Chico community and California’s historical heritage.
