Matthew McConaughey’s Camp Fire Action Thriller Hits Streaming this Week

A powerful new film about one of California’s darkest days is arriving on streaming this week. The Lost Bus, directed by Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips, United 93, The Bourne Ultimatum), will be available on AppleTV+ October 3 and tells the true story of survival during the 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise.

The action-thriller follows bus driver Kevin McKay (played by Matthew McConaughey) and school teacher Mary Ludwig (America Ferrera) as they saved the lives of 22 children trapped in the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history. The Camp Fire killed 85 people, destroyed more than 18,000 structures, and displaced over 50,000 residents.

The movie is based on Lizzie Johnson’s award-winning 2021 book Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire, which chronicled the blaze through the voices of survivors and local heroes. Greengrass and writer Brad Ingelsby (Mare of Easttown) adapted the section about the school bus rescue into a full-length cinematic survival story.

Filmed in New Mexico, the production recreated the terrifying journey through fire using practical effects and safe controlled burns to capture the chaos and intensity of that day. Greengrass’ signature documentary-style realism and kinetic camerawork drive the film, placing viewers inside the bus as flames surround the children and their rescuers.

While centered on a small group’s desperate escape, The Lost Bus also reflects broader themes of resilience and the growing threat of catastrophic wildfires across California and beyond.

For Northern California residents, the film offers both a harrowing reminder of tragedy and a testament to courage in the face of impossible odds.
