Missing Backpacker Found Dead in Yosemite After Nearly Two Weeks
A tragic end came to the search for a missing backpacker in Yosemite National Park. Kirk S. Thomas Olsen, 61, who set out on a backpacking trip on August 23, was found dead on Saturday after being overdue for nearly two weeks.
Olsen was last seen near Ostrander Lake, a popular hiking destination in Yosemite. He was scheduled to return from his trip on August 27, but when he didn’t make it back, concerns quickly grew. Yosemite park officials put out a call for help, asking anyone who had been in the area—whether they had seen Olsen or not—to come forward with any information.
On Thursday, park officials announced that they were actively searching for Olsen, emphasizing the urgency of the situation as his absence stretched to nearly two weeks. Sadly, on Saturday morning, they confirmed that Olsen had been found dead. The circumstances of his death and the specific location where his body was discovered have not been released.
Ostrander Lake, accessible from Glacier Point Road, is a remote spot known for its serene beauty. The trail to the lake stretches over 11 miles, offering hikers a challenging yet rewarding trek through Yosemite’s stunning wilderness.
As of now, Yosemite officials have not provided further details but have expressed their condolences to Olsen’s family and friends.
