Northern Lights Make Glorious Return to Northern California

Following one of the most spectacular Northern Lights shows ever seen in Northern California in May, the glow of the Aurora Borealis returned to the region over the weekend in a glorious way. Typically visible in regions much farther north, this stunning natural phenomenon graced the skies over Lake Almanor on Saturday night in a glorious way.

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are caused by solar particles colliding with Earth’s atmosphere, creating vibrant displays of light. The recent surge in solar activity resulted in a geomagnetic storm, which expanded the auroral oval farther south than usual, making the lights visible in areas like Northern California.

Photographer Jake Edwards was among those fortunate enough to witness this extraordinary event. Armed with his camera, Edwards set up at Lake Almanor, capturing stunning images of the mesmerizing scene:

For those who missed it, keep an eye on solar activity reports and geomagnetic forecasts. You never know when the Northern Lights might make another unexpected appearance, turning the night sky into a canvas of celestial art.
