Northern Lights Make Glorious Return to the Skies of Northern California

After the incredible year of 2024, when we had numerous sightings of the Northern Lights in the skies over Northern California, the aurora borealis hasn’t been seen so far this year. Until last night, when one photographer captured the natural phenomenon over Lake Almanor.

Jake Edwards has become known as one of the best in the region at getting photography of the rare Northern Lights sightings in NorCal, and he delivered again. Overnight, he captured these images over Lake Almanor:

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are caused by solar particles colliding with Earth’s atmosphere, creating vibrant displays of light. The recent surge in solar activity resulted in a geomagnetic storm, which expanded the auroral oval farther south than usual, making the lights visible in areas like Northern California.

Jake has become very adept at keeping an eye on the forecasts and being at the right place as the phenomenon is seen this far south. He even caught this timelapse of the event that coincided with the Perseid Meteor Shower:

It was just another incredible capture for Jake. Thanks for always giving us great photography!
