Perseid Meteor Shower to Light Up Northern California Skies Next Week

The Perseid meteor shower—hailed by NASA as one of the year’s best—will peak in the Northern California sky on the nights of August 12 and 13, with viewing opportunities continuing through August 23. This dazzling celestial event treats stargazers to bright meteors streaking swiftly across the atmosphere and colorful fireballs exploding overhead.

However, this year’s show faces a challenge: a waning gibbous moon will brighten the night sky during peak activity, reducing visible meteors by about 75%. Instead of the usual 50 to 100 meteors per hour, observers may only see 10 to 20, mostly the brightest shooting stars.

To catch the best glimpse of the Perseids, head outside after 10 p.m., with the prime viewing window between midnight and dawn. Rural areas away from city lights offer the clearest views. Look toward the northeast, where the constellation Perseus—the meteor shower’s radiant point—will be visible.

Originating from the debris of Comet Swift-Tuttle, discovered in 1862, the Perseids are among the most spectacular annual meteor showers, along with the Geminids. Unlike the chilly December Geminids, the Perseids offer warm August nights perfect for skywatching.

For the best experience:

  • Find a dark spot away from city lights and let your eyes adjust to the darkness for 15-20 minutes.
  • Dress comfortably and bring blankets or chairs.
  • Relax and enjoy the sky—the magic of a meteor shower is as much in the experience as the spectacle.

Even with moonlight interference, the Perseids promise a memorable show for Northern California stargazers this August.
