Planned Prescribed Fire Operations Underway Near Lake Tahoe’s West Shore

Prescribed fire operations are set to resume this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin as land managers continue efforts to reduce wildfire risk around local communities.
According to the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, planned burns are expected to take place beginning today through Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026, pending final weather and safety approvals. Officials say prescribed fire work could continue throughout the winter when conditions allow.
The upcoming operation will focus on the Tahoe Hills Urban Lots area, covering roughly 16 acres near Highway 89 in Rubicon Bay on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. The project area is located in El Dorado County.

During active burning, portions of the area may be temporarily closed to the public for safety reasons. Visitors and residents are advised to watch for posted warning signs and follow directions from fire personnel near burn sites.
Smoke is expected at times, and officials urge people to monitor local air quality conditions through AirNow or its mobile app. Drivers encountering smoke on roadways should reduce speed and use headlights to improve visibility.
Forest managers will evaluate weather conditions shortly before ignition. If conditions change, scheduled burns may be postponed or canceled.
