Popular Lake Near Tahoe Is Getting Strict New Rules Before Summer to Deal With Parking and Erosion

If you visit Donner Lake near Truckee this summer, expect some changes along the shoreline.
The Town of Truckee is rolling out a series of transportation improvements along Donner Pass Road aimed at reducing parking chaos, protecting the lake from erosion and making the corridor safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Most of the changes are being implemented in May.
The biggest issue has been unsanctioned roadside parking during peak season. Vehicles regularly squeeze onto shoulders that are not designed for parking, blocking bike lanes, creating hazards for pedestrians and contributing to erosion that sends sediment into the lake. To address it, the town is placing boulders along sections of the roadside where parking interferes with bike lanes or causes environmental damage.
The goal is not to eliminate all parking along the lake, but to prevent it in spots where there simply is not enough room to do it safely. Overnight parking restrictions are already in effect on sections of Donner Pass Road, South Shore Drive and part of West River Street, prohibiting parking from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Speed limits along the corridor are also being reduced. The Truckee Town Council approved a new ordinance lowering speeds, and the change is expected to take effect in May. Motorcycle officers will patrol the area alongside targeted enforcement and electronic message signs.
Donner Lake has seen steadily increasing visitor pressure in recent years, and the narrow two-lane road that runs along its shore was not built to handle the volume of summer traffic it now receives.
For visitors, the message is simple: arrive early, park legally and stay out of the bike lanes.
