This Northern California City Just Declared Itself the “Paddling Capital of California”

Folsom has a new identity, and it involves a paddle.
The city just launched a destination brand calling itself the “Paddling Capital of California,” leaning into the water recreation that has quietly made Folsom one of the best spots in the Sacramento region for kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing and other non-motorized water sports.
The branding highlights Folsom Lake, Lake Natoma and the American River as the foundation of the city’s outdoor recreation identity. Lake Natoma in particular has become a popular spot for flatwater paddling, with calm conditions, scenic views and easy access from several launch points along the shore.
Folsom Lake, which is sitting at 93% capacity and well above its historical average heading into summer, offers more open water and varied conditions depending on wind and lake levels. The American River Parkway connects the two, creating a continuous corridor for paddlers who want to explore beyond a single body of water.
The new brand is part of a broader push by the city to attract visitors who might not think of Folsom as an outdoor recreation destination. While the city is well known for its historic district, the prison and the Johnny Cash connection, the paddling angle taps into a growing market of people looking for accessible, affordable outdoor activities close to Sacramento.
Paddleboard and kayak rentals are available at several locations around Lake Natoma and Folsom Lake during the summer months. No prior experience is necessary for most flatwater paddling, making it a good option for families and beginners.
