Popular Tahoe Mountain to Open for Winter Ski Season After Master Plan Approved

Lake Tahoe’s beloved Homewood Mountain Resort will reopen for the ski season after months of uncertainty.

On Thursday, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency approved key amendments to the resort’s master plan, paving the way for the historic West Shore resort to continue operations.

The approval allows for critical reinvestment into Homewood, which first opened in 1961.

“The Homewood Master Plan approval today includes enforceable standards that will ensure the beloved West Shore resort can be revitalized while remaining open to the public,” Julie Regan, the Tahoe agency’s executive director, said in a statement

JMA Ventures, which purchased the 1,200-acre resort in 2007, had announced in October that Homewood would shut down for the season due to delays in master plan approvals and a financial partner pulling out. The approved amendments include relocating the gondola terminal, reducing residential density, and enhancing scenic “view corridors” of the mountain and lake.

Construction on a new gondola to replace the North Base chairlift is now expected to begin soon, along with scaled-down projects to improve accommodations and commercial spaces at the resort’s base areas. Updated designs feature modern architecture tailored to the environment.
