Sacramento River Flooding Possible Overnight in Northern California

A flood warning has been issued for parts of Northern California as rising river levels threaten low-lying areas along the Sacramento River.

The National Weather Service Sacramento issued the warning at 2:08 p.m. Tuesday, effective from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wednesday for Butte County and Glenn County. Forecasters say minor flooding is expected along the Sacramento River at Ord Ferry, where water levels are forecast to reach 114 feet—right at designated flood stage on the river’s left bank.

Officials are urging residents and travelers to use extreme caution, especially overnight and during the Wednesday morning commute. The National Weather Service emphasized its familiar warning: “Turn around, don’t drown,” noting that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.

Anyone living or recreating in flood-prone or low-lying areas is advised to move to higher ground immediately and follow any evacuation orders without delay. Drivers should never attempt to cross flooded roads, even if water appears shallow. According to the NWS, just six inches of moving water can knock a person off their feet, and 12 inches can sweep away most vehicles.

Another update from the National Weather Service is expected Wednesday morning at 8 a.m.
