Sheriff: Woman Found Dead in Northern California Home Had ‘Encounter with a Bear’

Downieville, California

A somber discovery in Northern California has left a community in mourning. Patrice Miller, a 71-year-old woman from Downieville, was found dead in her home, and evidence strongly suggests an encounter with a bear occurred after her passing, as revealed by the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office.

The sad chain of events unfolded when concerned individuals alerted authorities to conduct a welfare check on Ms. Miller, who had not been seen or heard from for several days. Responding deputies had to forcibly enter her home, where they found her lifeless body. Alongside this heartbreaking discovery, they also uncovered evidence pointing to a subsequent bear encounter.

Investigators believe that Ms. Miller had passed away before the bear entered her residence. While the exact reason for the bear’s presence remains uncertain, it’s hypothesized that the animal may have been drawn to the home by scent or other factors.

In a statement, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office expressed its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Patrice Miller, acknowledging the profound tragedy that has befallen their community.

Although the type of bear involved in this incident remains unidentified, it’s important to note that black bears are the only wild bear species found in California.

As the investigation continues, residents are urged to exercise caution when encountering bears and other wildlife. It’s advised to secure ground-level doors and windows during the night, lock vehicles, and remove any food items, including garbage, from easily accessible areas to discourage wildlife from approaching human habitats.
