Sierra-at-Tahoe Closes Again as Powerful Tahoe Storm Dumps More Than 5 Feet of Snow

As a massive Sierra storm continues to hammer the Lake Tahoe region, Sierra-at-Tahoe is forced to remain closed on February 19 as conditions continue to intensify.

The resort reported 22 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours, bringing the storm total to more than 5.5 feet. And it’s not over yet. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting strong winds and up to two more feet of snow throughout the day.

With whiteout conditions, heavy snowfall, and high winds creating hazardous terrain, resort officials say crews have been working around the clock to dig out lifts, clear infrastructure, and conduct avalanche mitigation work. But this system “means business,” according to the resort’s announcement.

The ongoing storm cycle has been part of a powerful February pattern slamming the Sierra Nevada, delivering feet of snow across higher elevations and creating dangerous travel conditions along mountain highways. Chain controls and intermittent road closures have been common around the Tahoe Basin as waves of moisture continue to move through the region.

Sierra-at-Tahoe is hopeful to reopen Friday, weather permitting. Guests planning to head up later this week are encouraged to check the resort’s snow report and highway conditions before traveling.

Those who purchased lift tickets, lessons, or rentals for February 19 can submit a cancellation request through the resort’s online form or contact the pass office for assistance.
