Stunning Views of the Aurora Borealis Seen Across Northern California

Regions of Northern California were treated to a unique spectacle on Sunday evening extending into Monday morning, when the northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, illuminated the night sky.

During Sunday afternoon, the NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center reported that intense geomagnetic storms were in progress, registering a level four on the five-point Geomagnetic Storm Impact scale. When this occurs, the aurora borealis can be seen further south than usual, even going as far south as NorCal.

For local photographers, this presented an opportunity to capture a stunning night sky typically only seen in places further north like Iceland and Canada.
