Tahoe’s Iconic Vikingsholm Castle to Undergo Major Restoration in Summer 2025

Vikingsholm, the historic castle tucked along the shores of Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe, is set for major restoration during the summer of 2025. Despite the construction, the iconic landmark will remain open for tours starting Memorial Day weekend.

Built in 1929, Vikingsholm has weathered nearly a century of harsh Sierra winters and seismic activity. The restoration will address critical structural issues while preserving the building’s historical charm. Two primary projects will focus on stabilizing the turret and brick chimneys and repairing damage from a 4.2-magnitude earthquake in 2021.

The turret restoration will include foundation reinforcement, stone veneer repairs, grading improvements, and patching of exterior cracks. The chimneys will undergo brick restoration and receive updated flashing and paint. Inside, the Morning Room—famous for its Scandinavian-inspired painted ceiling—will see repairs to cracked plaster and restoration of the original artwork.

While certain areas around the building will be closed for construction, tours will continue through summer, allowing visitors to experience this architectural gem firsthand.

The project is funded through the California State Parks Deferred Maintenance Program and Proposition 68. Work is expected to wrap up by fall 2025. For the latest tour updates and information, visit the Sierra State Parks Foundation website at https://sierrastateparks.org.
