The Delta and Hirz Fires Have Merged, Burning a Total of 83,000 Acres Combined

The Delta Fire erupted on the afternoon of September 5 smack dab in the middle of the burnt areas of the Carr and Hirz Fires. As the Delta Fire hits 36,970 acres with zero containment, it has connected to the Hirz Fire, now covering a connected burnt area of 83,000 acres.

With zero containment, it’s expected to eventually reach the burnt area of the Carr Fire, which would then cover a combined area of 310,000 acres burnt.

The Delta Fire continued to expand on Saturday, moving in every direction along Interstate 5 near Lakehead. The Hirz Fire sits at 46,150 acres and is currently 89 percent contained. The Carr fire burned 229,651 and is 100 percent contained.

I-5 will remain closed to through traffic for a 45 mile stretch between Lake Shasta and Dunsmuir. Officials will reexamine the situation on Sunday morning to determine when they might reopen the freeway.
