This Holiday Train Ride Takes You to a Giant, Light-Covered Redwood in Mendocino County

There’s no shortage of holiday light displays this time of year—but few involve a train ride deep into Mendocino County’s redwood forests. Each December, the historic Skunk Train transforms a classic rail journey out of Willits into a festive winter experience that ends beneath a towering, light-covered coastal redwood.
The two-hour round-trip excursion winds through forested canyons before stopping at a clearing where passengers step off to take in a massive redwood illuminated with thousands of lights. Often described as the world’s largest living Christmas tree, the centuries-old giant rises more than 200 feet into the night sky, creating a jaw-dropping moment—especially from the train’s open-air cars.
The ride itself leans into old-school holiday charm. Vintage railcars, seasonal music, complimentary hot cocoa and cookies, and family-friendly entertainment set the tone. Kids can meet the costumed “Mr. Skunk,” while adults soak up the slower pace and glowing forest backdrop. VIP upgrades are available for priority boarding and souvenirs, and children under two ride free on a lap.

The Skunk Train traces its roots back to the 1880s, when the line hauled timber along the North Coast. Today, it blends railroad history with modern experiences, from railbikes to seasonal themed rides like this one.
From the Bay Area, Willits is roughly a three-hour drive north of San Francisco, making the trip doable as a long day adventure or an easy overnight getaway. Holiday departures run on select dates through December, and tickets tend to sell out quickly—especially on weekends.
